I have been called a sandwich snob. That accusation is false. However, I do believe in something called sandwich theory. This is my quest to find the greatest sandwiches in Madison. Send me your sandwich recommendations by email or on Twitter or Instagram.
The leaves had changed and fall weather was here in force (winter hadn’t gotten here quite yet) and this put me in the mood for an autumn sandwich experience. Fromagination, a cheese shop and deli on the Capitol Square, has wooden shelves packed with all sorts of goodies and interesting artisan foodstuffs. With some French music playing overhead, I decided to try what they simply call their signature sandwich: smoked turkey breast, French brie, cranberry relish, and lettuce on wheat bread with honey and sunflower seeds on the crust.
Bread: 4.85/5
The wheat bread provided a great base and foundation. It was chewy on the inside, with the perfect amount of crunch on the outside. It was cut just the right thickness so as to not overpower the makings or the sandwich as a whole.
Makings: 4.95/5
The brie was fantastic: just soft enough to meld with the turkey, but not so soft that it oozed out of the sandwich. It also balanced perfectly with the relish, which was a little bit sour as you’d expect from cranberries. The turkey was savory and smoky.
Architecture: 4.9/5
This is one of those sandwiches you could hold in one hand and munch away at while, say, walking around the Square. None of the makings escaped out of any edge, and the last bite was nicely balanced between bread and a bit of all the makings.
Value: 4.9/5
This is a good-sized sandwich and a great value at $9.50. I left plenty full. This is one of Fromagination’s sandwiches that is made daily before the lunch hour, so you can grab it on the go and reduce wait time if you’re on a short lunch break.
Overall: 4.9/5
Fromagination’s signature was one of my easier sandwiches to review. The subtle mix of savory, rich, sweet and sour was remarkable. I think it’s possible to eat this sandwich multiple times a week and not get tired of it. Also, any sandwich that comes wrapped in butcher’s paper gets automatic bonus points from me.
