Today in 100% completely true news, Shaquille O’Neal is coming to Madison — but not for the reason you’re expecting.
The four-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer will be performing at Breese Stevens Field on June 22, under the name “DJ Shaq.” That’s right, folks. The Big Aristotle is a DJ now, and he’s opening for REO Speedwagon.
I’m well aware that everything I just wrote sounds made up, but I swear it’s all true.
The event is planned in conjunction with the American Family Insurance Championship, a PGA tournament hosted at University Ridge Golf Course. This is all real, I promise you. He’ll be performing two 20-minute sets: one following the first opener, A Thousand Horses, and another after the second opener, Sara Evans. Both are country acts.
REO Speedwagon, as you probably know, is a staple of classic rock radio, and all of this is real and actually happening.
You might be asking yourself: “Why is one of the greatest NBA players of all time DJing at an event for a golf tournament alongside two modern country artists and an ’80s dad rock band?”
The easy answer? Shaq is the brand ambassador for The General, an auto insurance company that’s also an AmFam affiliate.
The better answer? The world is a terrifying, chaotic place, and human existence is nothing more than drunken scrawlings on the universe’s bathroom wall.
