Frontman Greg Graffin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/articles\/2007\/08\/greg-graffin-punkrock-phd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">born in Madison<\/a> and spent time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milwaukeemag.com\/PunkRockLegendGregGraffin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Racine and Milwaukee<\/a> before moving to the Golden State. Now, Dr. Graffin (he has a doctorate from Cornell in history of science) and his Bad Religion bandmates are true icons. Their leftist melodic punk helped to inspire an entire generation of bands to form and countless punks to pick up a dictionary and look up what the hell \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UkmHk2CEAOs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jurisprudence<\/a>\u201d means. Pieces by Gershwin, Beckel, Bagley and Tchaikovsky will all be featured in this classical celebration of \u2019Murica. For his part, Rubardt is a musical journeyman who has conducted orchestras all over the country. The Berkeley, California native also has a doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from Julliard. So that\u2019s one thing he has in common with Bad Religion\u2019s Greg Graffin.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h2>Heart Bones<\/h2>\n<p><em>Wednesday, July 3, High Noon Saloon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.high-noon.com\/event\/9478445\/heart-bones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With Prince Rogers Nelson having ascended to a higher plane of existence, Sean Tillmann \u2014 aka Har Mar Superstar \u2014 is now the most soulful weirdo in the Twin Cities. As Heart Bones, Tillmann partners with noted howler Sabrina Ellis of A Giant Dog. Together they recall the best duos of AM Gold, albeit with their own irreverence injected. In February, they performed the <a href=\"https:\/\/first-avenue.com\/event\/2019\/02\/heartbones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Dirty Dancing<\/em> soundtrack<\/a> in Minneapolis. The Canadian artist behind the band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebozho.com\/new-music-ariana-grande-foxwarren-carly-rae-jepsen\/\">Foxwarren<\/a> crafts lush indie rock that seeps into every open space it comes in contact with. It\u2019s painstakingly crafted work, so it makes total sense that, despite being a band for 10+ years, Foxwarren didn\u2019t release their first album until last year. But in that decade, Shauf and his Foxwarren bandmates built a musical language and communication that is almost unparalleled. In 1984\u2019s <em>Stranger Than Paradise<\/em>, two of Jarmusch\u2019s three leads are played by jazz musician (and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lurie_john\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter god<\/a>) John Lurie and former Sonic Youth drummer Richard Edson. In it, the two and Lurie\u2019s character\u2019s Hungarian cousin drift through life in 1980s New York. When it came time to name the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nodepression.com\/album-reviews\/alejandro-escovedos-every-night-breakthrough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">best artist of the 1990s<\/a>, alt-country bible <em>No Depression <\/em>\u2014 a magazine <em>named after an Uncle Tupelo song<\/em> \u2014 chose Alejandro Escovedo. It\u2019s an inspired choice, too. Before striking out on his own, Escovedo led the influential cowpunk band Rank and File. But since the late \u201980s, he\u2019s built a solo career on those same rootsy ethos with a shot of chicano rock for good measure. Identical twins Jared and Jonathan Mattson \u2014 The Mattson 2 \u2014 play a contemporary take on jazz that draws from elements of atmospheric rock and primal rhythm, resulting in mesmerizing live show. Also appearing is <strong>Kainalu<\/strong>, a project that sees Madison musician Trent Prall delivering a psychedelic indie rock that draws heavily from his Japanese Hawaiian heritage.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h2>Help Desk<\/h2>\n<p><em>Friday, July 5, The Wisco (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/2018324141797842\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Madison\u2019s favorite I.T. themed punks (well, Madison\u2019s <em>only<\/em> I.T. themed punks) are putting on a show to help you sweat out that post-Fourth hangover. And with Help Desk are some seriously talented bands from around the Midwest. Chicago\u2019s <strong>Dead Rest <\/strong>will bring their high-energy live set to town, as will Freeport, Ill.\u2019s spectacularly named <strong>Flaccid Pickle<\/strong>. In addition to his \u201cuncle after a couple cold ones\u201d vibe on stage, Kevin has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, including <em>Black Sheep<\/em>, <em>The Waterboy<\/em>, <em>Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/em> and MTV\u2019s <em>2ge+her<\/em>. Here, the seasoned stand-up will headline two nights in his hometown. Namely, the expulsion of her family from the fundamentalist church she grew up in. The result is a haunting collection of indie folk that teters between hope and despair, a clear representation of some deep inner turmoil. Local garage supergroup Dumb Vision (featuring members of Fire Heads and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebozho.com\/wood-chickens-push-boundaries-cowpunk-sound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wood Chickens<\/a>) will headline. And lastly, there\u2019s <strong>Tom Grrrl<\/strong>, an energetic power punk group with roots here in the Mad City.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h2>\u2018Jaws\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><em>Sunday, July 7, Memorial Union Terrace (<a href=\"https:\/\/union.wisc.edu\/events-and-activities\/event-calendar\/event\/jaws-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cinemas today are dominated by blockbuster franchise films, and the film widely regarded as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/06\/jaws-modern-blockbuster-steven-spielberg-1201844390\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first summer blockbuster<\/a> is <em>Jaws<\/em>. Steven Spielberg\u2019s 1975 breakthrough wasn\u2019t just an enormous moneymaker, but a technical triumph. As dated as it may look now, its mechanical shark was a watershed moment for special effects and redefined how exactly films can suspend disbelief.
