Now he\u2019s headlining one of the biggest rooms in town.<\/p>\n<p>The iconoclastic rocker will perform at the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum on April 10, 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpc-live.com\/events\/sturgill-simpson-a-good-lookn-tour-w-special-guest-tyler-childers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it was announced today<\/a>. It\u2019s in support of his stellar 2019 album, <em>Sound and Fury<\/em>, and he\u2019ll bring along fellow Kentuckian and cosmic cowboy Tyler Childers.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 5px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sturgill Simpson - Sing Along (Official Video)\" width=\"689\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SpSMoBp8awM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 10px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>Once heralded as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/is-sturgill-simpson-country-musics-savior-not-if-he-can-help-it-55612\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">country music savior<\/a>, the 41-year-old Simpson has spent much of his career trying to shake that label. His breakthrough 2014 album <em>Metamodern Sounds in Country Music<\/em> had a down-home vibe, but was spiked with psychedelic imagery. The Grammy-winning 2016 follow-up <em>A Sailor\u2019s Guide to Earth<\/em> pushed him further away from Nashville as he explored classic funk and soul elements. And with this year\u2019s <em>Sound and Fury<\/em>, Simpson has made another left turn, delivering a scuzzy, simmering album that sounds more like Queens of the Stone Age than Chris Stapleton. Or as Vinyl Me, Please\u2019s Andrew Winistorfer perfectly puts it:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The Sturgill album is perfect mow your lawn and pretend you&#8217;re the Terminator music<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Andrew Winistorfer (@thestorfer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thestorfer\/status\/1177674239874347008?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 27, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also probably the only country-adjacent album to have its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81171121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anime companion piece<\/a>, like, ever.<\/p>\n<p>Better still, this tour stop is a two-headed monster: Sturgill\u2019s prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Tyler Childers will be his opener. The 28-year-old also put out a fantastic album this year \u2014\u00a0the Simpson-produced <em>Country Squire<\/em> \u2014\u00a0and could fill a large venue in his own right. (For example, he headlined The Sylvee last October.) Like Sturgill, Childers is a hyperliterate man of the people with a liberal policy on drugs. When he sings \u201cget me higher than the grocery bill\u201d on 2017\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WtVrDud1gZM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whitehouse Road<\/a>,\u201d I feel that shit on a deep and spiritual level.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets go on sale next Friday, Nov. 8, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/2500234306914886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">assorted pre-sales<\/a>\u00a0next week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first time Sturgill Simpson played Madison, in 2013, it was at the small confines of The Frequency.
