That day job, BTW, is playing sax in the <em>goddamn E Street Band<\/em>. (Jake replaced his uncle, the legendary Clarence Clemons, after his death in 2011.) But Jake has a strong catalog away from The Boss, releasing two solo albums of socially-conscious, rootsy pop rock. The 43-year-old is always on the move, whether he\u2019s touring around the States or performing for U.S. troops stationed overseas. (Kellogg was named the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.sltrib.com\/article.php?id=11230114&amp;itype=storyID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year <\/a>in 2010.) And it\u2019s not difficult to find what gives him that kind of broad appeal. The easygoing folk pop he delivers on songs like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6qbkxHIE7hE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glassjaw Boxer<\/a>\u201d paint him as a rock \u2018n\u2019 roll everyman. In other words, just a guy with a job that he happens to do very well. (Besides being very cool and talented dudes, it seems.) They all got their start under the nebulous umbrella of \u201cboy bands.\u201d Basically, if a group can cause teenage girls to fly into a frenzy as if infected by the rage drug from <em>28 Days Later<\/em>, and all the members are young men, it\u2019s a boy band. One Direction, Backstreet Boys, BTS? Boy bands for sure. Even The Beatles count as an OG boy band. The wheels are turning on Donald Trump\u2019s impeachment, even if the Senate is already <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/sunday-talk-shows\/474639-democrats-question-fairness-of-senate-trial-after-graham-mcconnell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saying the quiet part out loud<\/a> again. Since unfortunately we need to remind them of their constitutional duty every now and then, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/donald-trump-impeachment-rallies-planned-house-vote-1476170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MoveOn-organized rally<\/a> will be held on the eve of the House vote. It\u2019s a chance to emphatically say, \u201cHey, guys: do your fucking jobs because no one is above the law.\u201d (Except Judge Dredd, who of course <em>is <\/em>the law.)<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h3>Brother Ali<\/h3>\n<p><em>Wednesday, Dec. 18, Majestic Theatre (<a href=\"https:\/\/majesticmadison.com\/event\/brother-ali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of my most memorable concert experiences was seeing Brother Ali at The Metro in Chicago, <em>wayyyy<\/em> back in 2009. The reason? A full decade and literally hundreds of shows later, the Minneapolis-via-Madison rapper can move a crowd like no other. The Rhymesayers OG has an elastic flow and a vocabulary so large it probably has its own field of gravity. Brother Ali is an underground legend and one of the most naturally gifted emcees ever. They\u2019ve mastered the art of ethereal party music, and play it to pitch perfection. If you like CHVRCHES (both their use of unusual spellings and love of punctuated synthesizers), you\u2019ll love GGOOLLDD. That\u2019s fitting, as multi-instrumentalist Andy Goitia spent part of his childhood in Argentina, drawing on a melting pot of sounds that mixes American folk and country with more exotic tones. Joining here is <strong>Old Pup<\/strong>, a Madison group that sends roots music soaring through the cosmos. Join New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) as he crawls and shimmies his way through Nakatomi Plaza, an L.A. skyscraper that\u2019s been overrun with a monologue-prone terrorist cell headed by the diabolical Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). The latest debate sees a miles-wide Democratic lineup shortened to just Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Andrew Yang and Tom Steyer. (If they\u2019re even there \u2014 some may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/12\/13\/politics\/picket-line-democratic-debate-2020-democrats\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">standing in solidarity with organized labor<\/a> instead.) A Milwaukee native, Kashian first started doing stand-up while attending UW-Madison in the \u201980s. She\u2019s since become a cult hero, hosting <em>The<\/em> <em>Dork Forest<\/em> podcast and appearing everywhere from <em>Conan <\/em>to <em>2 Dope Queens<\/em>. And I will once again use this opportunity to stump for myself playing the Meat Loaf role from the original film. I can\u2019t sing or dance, but I do own <em>Bat Out of Hell<\/em> on vinyl. That has to count for something, right?<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h3>Darren Sterud\u2019s Nutcracker Spectacular<\/h3>\n<p><em>Friday, Dec. 20, Majestic Theatre (<a href=\"https:\/\/majesticmadison.com\/event\/darren-steruds-nutcracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even the most beloved holiday standards can feel stale over time. In this instance, Darren Sterud\u2019s orchestra is jazzing up \u201cthe Nutcracker\u201d by playing Duke Ellington\u2019s interpretation of it. <a href=\"https:\/\/madison.com\/ct\/entertainment\/music\/get-crackin-darren-sterud-jazzes-up-the-nutcracker-at-the\/article_e4e1d5ce-f1ff-52a3-a976-3d787c0540d7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sterud says<\/a> that Duke \u201chad this way of taking classical music and really making it accessible in a completely different genre.\u201d The translation from ballet to jazz alone is fascinating, as is Sterud\u2019s staunch refusal to go through the musical motions for the holiday.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h3>Winter Solstice Sunset Bonfire<\/h3>\n<p><em>Saturday, Dec. 21, Olbrich Park (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/748124405672192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Welcome the coldest season of the year in a strangely fitting way: an outdoor party. The annual bonfire is a chance for folks to get together with their neighbors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc15.com\/content\/news\/Madison-bundles-up-for-Annual-Winter-Solstice-Sunset-Bonfire-503368491.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">literally and figuratively<\/a> burn away their bad vibes (or send wishes into the next year, whichever you prefer). In addition to the huge fire, there will be hot chocolate and cider, signing, dancing, and giant puppets. It all sounds pretty cool, but to be honest you had me at \u201cgiant puppets.\u201d<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h3>Graham Hunt &amp; CNL<\/h3>\n<p><em>Saturday, Dec. 21, Communication (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/2494290334224556\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As frontman for Midnight Reruns, Graham Hunt staked his claim as Milwaukee\u2019s king of Pabst-soaked, throwback rock \u2018n\u2019 roll. But now Hunt lives in Madison, which I suppose makes him our king of the same thing. His solo debut <em>Leaving Silver City<\/em> recalls the experimental later years of Midnight Reruns\u2019 own spiritual forebears, The Replacements. Hunt will be performing here as a duo with Claire Nelson-Lifson (aka CNL), one-third of Proud Parents\u2019 three-pronged songwriting attack. <strong>Kat &amp; The Hurricane<\/strong> and <strong>Darker N\u2019 Darker <\/strong>round out this night of local alt-rock.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3237954530\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=51bcce\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/grahamhunt.bandcamp.com\/album\/leaving-silver-city\">Leaving Silver City by Graham Hunt<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h3>Wood Chickens<\/h3>\n<p><em>Saturday, Dec. 21, Come Back In (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/448167646079291\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Few bands embrace absurdism as much as Wood Chickens do, so their holiday concert is always worth checking out. The twang-punk trio promise \u201cmusic, gifts, fun, cartoons and plenty of holiday cheer,\u201d in addition to their signature brand of goofball rock. (See their 2018 album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebozho.com\/wood-chickens-push-boundaries-cowpunk-sound\/\"><em>Well Done!<\/em><\/a> for specific examples.) Support comes from a pair of Chicagoland artists, folk punk <strong>Davey Dynamite<\/strong> and \u201cwaltzcore\u201d group <strong>Diner\u2019s Club<\/strong>.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 40px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<h3>\u2018National Lampoon\u2019s Christmas Vacation\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><em>Saturday, Dec. 21, Majestic Theatre (<a href=\"https:\/\/majesticmadison.com\/event\/holiday-brew-n-view-xmas-vacation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">info<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let me get this out of my system, because I can\u2019t hold it in any longer: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BeskbiJjCXI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shitter\u2019s full!<\/a>\u201d There are plenty of memorable lines in the 1989 holiday classic <em>Christmas Vacation<\/em>, but Randy Quaid\u2019s crude exclamation is the one that abanlways sticks out to me. Family man Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) is trying to plan a perfect Christmas when idiot Cousin Eddie (Quaid) parks his RV on Clark\u2019s lawn \u2014 and to make matters worse, Clark\u2019s shrewd boss is quietly taking away his company\u2019s holiday bonuses. It all sounds tragic, but it\u2019s actually quite funny.
