Houndmouth is lucky enough to have three.<\/p>\n<p>The trio from New Albany, Indiana (near the Kentucky border) has often been compared to The Band \u2014 not just for their ragged mix of alt-country and blues, but because everyone in the band can sing and they all do it well.<\/p>\n<p>Guitarist Matt Myers, bassist Zak Appleby and drummer Shane Cody currently share vocal duties, but the band\u2019s two albums \u2014 2013\u2019s <em>From the Hills Below the City<\/em> and 2015\u2019s <em>Little Neon Limelight<\/em> \u2014 also featured the stellar work of former keyboardist Katie Toupin. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Houndmouth\/posts\/1053344738073253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toupin amicably left<\/a> Houndmouth in 2016 but the remaining members have kept at it, adding saxophones and sharpening their sound.<\/p>\n<p>Houndmouth plays the Majestic Theatre <a href=\"http:\/\/majesticmadison.com\/event\/houndmouth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on April 15<\/a>, and in anticipation I\u2019ve identified the best song for each of the band&#8217;s vocalists.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"689\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hws_N4St0BU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Matt Myers: \u201cPenitentiary\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Myers is the closest thing Houndmouth has to a traditional frontman. The lanky guitar wizard is usually the most visible member of the band, handling a good deal of their press. Similarly, he also sings lead on the majority of their songs, making it a little tougher to sort through them for his best performance, but \u201cPenitentiary\u201d is a standout.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing on both their 2012 debut EP and <em>From the Hills Below the City<\/em>, it\u2019s one of their most Band-esque songs and serves as something a thesis statement on the group. Built around a laid-back guitar line, it features Myers waxing poetic on a life spent on the wrong side of the tracks. Though \u201cPenitentiary\u201d checks off a lot of the hard-living tropes found throughout country music, Myers (who sounds a bit like Ryan Adams and looks a bit like Emile Hirsch) brings some boyish earnestness to lyrics of robbing and stealing generally reserved for dudes far more haggard.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"689\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I3H6o9YPLwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Zak Appleby: \u201c15 Years\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike his more laconic bandmates, Appleby\u2019s vocals ooze exuberance. It\u2019s understandable, then, that many of the group\u2019s rockers are left to the bassist. I nearly chose \u201cHey Rose,\u201d but after revisiting <em>Little Neon Limelight<\/em>, it would feel like a waste to not showcase \u201c15 Years.\u201d It\u2019s a straight-up garage rocker that features harmonies from the band\u2019s other four members (this was before Toupin\u2019s departure). And the song\u2019s split personalities are a testament to Appleby\u2019s versatility. From it\u2019s garage-punk verses to a soulful, Allman-esque chorus, Appleby delivers whenever called upon.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"689\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LEnE8hTGAII?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Shane Cody: \u201cLong as You\u2019re at Home\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Cody has the distinction of being the center point to two of Houndmouth\u2019s more downer songs. Though <em>From the Hills Below the City<\/em> is the only album on which Cody sings lead, the hirsute stickman lends an aching, wavering voice to a band that usually sounds sunny, even in their darker moments. On \u201cLong as You\u2019re at Home,\u201d he warbles about the steadying effect of love with a kind of universal weariness that lends a great deal of authenticity. A lot of people write songs about missing their partners, but few feel it out loud the way Cody does here.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"689\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r6Bygcox6YE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Kate Toupin: \u201cOtis\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Toupin is no longer a member of Houndmouth, but her contributions to the band are immeasurable. There\u2019s an easy chemistry between her and Matt Myers, which comes from the two playing in a folk duo together before forming Houndmouth. Some of their best tracks feature Toupin\u2019s smoky lead vocals, notable among them \u201cOtis.\u201d Ostensibly about the mythology of legendary singer Otis Redding, \u201cOtis\u201d is far and away Toupin\u2019s best vocal performance, combining an easy soulfulness with throat-shredding highs in a chorus that aches and celebrates in equal part.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many bands struggle to find even one single good singer.
