No, that’s not dust in your eye; it’s just your tear ducts warming themselves up for The National.

It was announced this morning that the Ohio-bred, Brooklyn-based indie rock icons will return to the Orpheum Theater on July 31, with Lucy Dacus. The band last played Madison in 2013, also at the Orpheum, with Frightened Rabbit.

Formed in 1999, The National have morphed over the years from a scrappy band of Midwestern post-punks to one of rock’s premier acts. Anchored by frontman Matt Berninger’s husky, devastating baritone, The National spent several years sharpening their sound (a somber blend of post-punk and baroque pop) before breaking through with 2007’s Boxer. They’ve since been nominated for two Grammys, winning their first trophy earlier this year for Best Alternative Music Album for their seventh full-length, Sleep Well Beast.

Matt Berninger can also be heard on Love is Dead, the recently released album by Scottish synth-pop act CHVRCHES, providing guest vocals on “My Enemy.”

Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 8 with a pre-sale on Thursday. It’s probably best to buy early; The National’s July 30 date in Milwaukee sold out.
