Despite reopening after the death of its lead baker and operator, 4&20 Bakery & Cafe will be closing permanently, its ownership has announced. The bakery’s last day will be Sunday, May 7.
4&20’s baker, and really the entire force behind the restaurant, Mandy Puntney, died unexpectedly on March 25 after an illness. She was 36.
The death shook the bakery staff and the Madison community. Puntney developed all the bakery’s recipes, including customer favorites homemade pop tarts and french toast made with sweet quick breads like pumpkin, lemon and raspberry.
As a way of saying thank you to the community which has supported the bakery through this difficult time, customers can get their last taste of Puntney’s recipes this weekend. The bakery will be open Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7. Ownership is also teasing a possible cookbook release — but in the meantime, stock up on your scones, coffee cake and biscuits. I bet they’d freeze well.
