Rocky Rococo has to be messing with us, right?
That’s the only way I can explain the “Dress Like Rocky” promotion the regional pizza chain has scheduled for April 20. (Though the official line is that it’s both National Look Alike Day and the company’s 45th anniversary.)
This year — on 4/20, mind you — if you show up at a participating Rocky’s location dressed like the company’s mascot, you will get a free slice of pizza. Big ups to Milwaukee Record for first reporting this news.
On the day that many will be doing that one thing that isn’t legal quite yet in our state, a pizza restaurant is offering free za. And to acquire it, you must dress up like one of the most iconic, occasionally horrifying mascots this side of Gritty. Or at least wear some Rocky’s apparel.Though Rocky’s first opened its doors in 1974 — in Madison! — it wasn’t until a couple years later that James Martin Pedersen (who died in 2016) first put on the white suit and sunglasses to market its pizza. Since then, the character has remained one of Wisconsin’s most recognizable corporate mascots, up there with Scoopie and Greg Marcus. In fact, it’s probably not a bad a idea to just have a Rocky costume on hand at all times.
